Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What is a physical therapist?
    • A physical therapist is an individual who received graduate training in physical therapy and is a licensed professional.  Physical therapists evaluate and treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions; pain syndromes, orthopedic conditions, sports medicine issues, and neurological dysfunctions as well.  According to the American Physical Therapy Association, "Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes."
  2. Do I need a Doctor's referral to come to physical therapy at TO THE CORE?
    1. Patients have direct access in the state of Maryland and are able to come directly to a physical therapist without a physician's referral.  However, Medicare and a couple private insurance companies require a doctor's referral.  At TO THE CORE, we can verify your benefits ahead of time and determine if you need a referral or not.
  3. How long is physical therapy?
    1. Physical therapy sessions last around an hour.  Sometimes symptoms can resolve after 1-2 sessions, but sometimes if you had a surgery and we are following a protocol you may in therapy for a couple to a few months to return to your previous sport or level of function.
  4. What will my physical therapy sessions entail?
    1. Your initial session will involve a comprehensive evaluation.  At TO THE CORE, we take into consideration the whole body.  We will take a thorough history, examine appropriate joints and muscles of the body, and develop an individualized plan of care.  A treatment technique or two may be provided depending on time and a home exercise program may be started.  From there, further appointments will be scheduled.
    2. At your next appointments, modalities may be used, including heat, ultrasound and electrical stimulation, and various manual and therapeutic exercises and activities may be done.  This may include a deep tissue massage, manual traction, manual muscle releases, strengthening and flexibility exercises, core strengthening, gait/walking exercises, balance exercises, sport specific training, and other tailored exercises and activities depending on your issue and/or surgery.
  5. Will I have the same therapist at TO THE CORE?
    1. YES!  At TO THE CORE, you are evaluated and treated by your therapist.
